Youth Refugee Adventure
KRM celebrated World Refugee Day this year, with Youth Refugee Adventure on June 18th. Youth from around Louisville gathered at Waterfront Park to spend the day as a refugee. Youth participated in a simulation of the refugee experience including being forced from their homes, encountering soldiers, and crossing a border before settling into a mock refugee camp. Youth then encountered typical tasks faced by refugees, such as registering as a refugee, eating a typical refugee meal, visiting the different offices normally found in camps, completing an official immigration interview, etc. Following the camp, youth had an opportunity to discuss the day’s events as well as what it means to be a refugee and what the refugee process entails with former refugees living in Louisville. Participating groups included St. Marks Episcopal, St. Andrew’s Episcopal, St. James Episcopal, Broadway Baptist, St. Agnes, and Highland Presbyterian churches.
