City-Wide Program for Refugee Elders
Senior refugee populations face a greater degree of isolation than their younger counterparts. They also find it difficult to access mainstream social services and activities which would allow them to acclimate to a new society much more quickly. It is also difficult to learn English in many schools and programs that are geared toward the general public.
The problem is recognized by Kentucky Refugee Ministries and Migration and Refugee Services of Catholic Charities. Together we are working to provide English and citizenship classes for older students so that they may prepare for and pass the U.S. citizenship test. Passing this test is of utmost importance in securing financial assistance for elders and in becoming full fledged American citizens in their new home country. In additions to English and civics instructions, the program also offers field experiences in Louisville and throughout Kentucky, art therapy, access to mainstream social services, and speakers who address topics of concerns to the aging population.
If you are interested in working with refugee elders, please contact Staci Kottkamp at KRM at 502.479.9180 ext 36. We have both volunteer and mentoring positions available.
This program is made possible through a grant provided through the Office of Refugee Resettlement, Department of Health and Human Services, administered by the Kentucky Office for Refugees.
